The goal
keep selling while INVIMA reaches a decision

A sanitary registration does not last forever. It has an expiration date, and renewing it on time is what lets a company keep importing and selling the product without interruptions. Renewal is not a last-minute task: the sooner you plan it, the lower the risk of ending up with an expired registration and a product you cannot sell.

How long a sanitary registration lasts

Validity depends on the product group. As a general rule it runs from 5 to 10 years, based on the category and the risk level, except for medications, whose registration currently has indefinite validity. You can review the detail by product type in our INVIMA sanitary registration guide.

Because each category has its own validity, the first thing is to know exactly when each of your registrations expires. A company with several products usually has different expiration dates, and losing track of a single one can push a product out of the market.

The rule worth remembering: at least 3 months ahead

The renewal application must be filed with INVIMA at least 3 months before expiration. That window exists for a practical reason: reviewing the documentation takes time, and filing the application before expiration lets you keep selling the product normally while INVIMA reaches a final decision.

If the renewal is filed late, or after the registration has already expired, that margin is lost and the product can be left without valid authorization to be sold.

What you file with the renewal

When you renew, you submit the documentation that proves the product’s safety and efficacy, with the same characteristics as the initial application. The specific requirements depend on the category, so it helps to review them in advance and gather the supporting documents before the deadline arrives.

Along with the renewal application you can also request authorization to sell off existing stock: this way the product already on the market with the expiring registration number can keep being sold until it reaches the end of its shelf life, without having to pull it overnight.

Turn renewal into a routine

The simplest way to avoid running late is to treat the expiration as a calendar date, not a surprise. An expiration calendar by product, with an alert a few months before each date, prevents last-minute scrambles and sales interruptions.

At SPI Américas we track your registrations’ expiration dates and prepare renewals ahead of time, so no product is left without authorization. If you want to get your registration calendar in order, let’s talk.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should I renew a sanitary registration?

The renewal application must be filed with INVIMA at least 3 months before expiration. Filing within that window lets you keep selling the product while the agency reaches a final decision.

What happens if the registration expires before INVIMA decides on the renewal?

If the application was filed on time, before expiration, the product can continue to be imported and sold normally until INVIMA issues a final decision. That benefit is lost when the application is filed late.

Do all sanitary registrations have the same validity?

No. Validity ranges from 5 to 10 years depending on the product's category and risk level, except for medications, whose registration currently has indefinite validity. That is why it helps to know the expiration date of each registration.

Can I keep selling the product already labeled with the registration about to expire?

With the renewal you can request authorization to sell off existing stock, which lets you sell the product already labeled with the expiring registration number until it reaches the end of its shelf life, without pulling it from the market right away.
