How Much Does It Cost to Register a Trademark in Colombia? (2026 SIC Fees)

Registering a trademark in Colombia before the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) carries an official fee of $1,347,500 for one class when the application is filed online (Resolución 6167 of January 30, 2026). Accredited micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises pay a reduced fee of $970,000. On top of that amount come the professional fees of the industrial property agent or attorney who handles the procedure.

The SIC’s official fee in 2026

The trademark registration fee is set by the SIC and updated each year by resolution. For 2026, Resolución 6167 of January 30, 2026 applies. The amount changes according to three factors: whether the application is filed online or on paper, whether it is for the first class or for additional classes, and whether the applicant is a company on the standard fee or an accredited MSME.

Item (Resolución 6167 of 2026)OnlineOn paper
First class, standard fee$1,347,500$1,638,500
Additional class, standard fee$673,500$777,500
First class, accredited MSME$970,000$1,179,000
Additional class, accredited MSME$485,000$560,500

A trademark registration has a term of 10 years and can be renewed for equal periods indefinitely. The table shows the online and on-paper fees for the first class and for each additional class within the same application.

Registering your company with the Chamber of Commerce is not registering your trademark

A common mistake is to believe that, by registering the company or the business establishment with the Chamber of Commerce, the trademark is already protected. These are two different procedures, before different entities, with different costs and different legal effects.

  • The commercial registration with the Chamber of Commerce registers the merchant and its establishment. It is a requirement for operating formally and for using a trade name, but it does not grant the exclusive right over the trademark.
  • Trademark registration with the SIC grants the exclusive right to use the trademark to identify your products or services and to prevent third parties from using it. Registration with the Chamber of Commerce does not grant that right.

Registering the name with the Chamber of Commerce does not prevent another person from registering that same denomination as a trademark with the SIC. That is why real protection of the trademark begins with registration before the SIC.

What that amount includes and what it does not

The SIC’s official fee covers the review of the registration application for one class. It is a payment to the State and does not include several costs that usually go along with the procedure:

  • The trademark clearance search, optional but recommended before filing.
  • The professional fees of the industrial property agent or attorney who prepares and handles the application.
  • The cost of responding to oppositions or requirements if they come up during the process.

The fee is what is paid to the State; the professional fees cover the advice that prepares the case and reduces the risk of the application being denied.

Cost per class: the Nice system

Trademarks are registered by classes of the Nice Classification, which groups products and services into 45 categories. Each additional class within the same application carries an extra cost: $673,500 online for the standard fee. If a trademark covers, for example, clothing (class 25) and retail services (class 35), you pay for the first class plus one additional class. Defining the classes well from the start avoids overpaying and avoids leaving products or services without protection.

Available discounts

  • MSME fee. Micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises accredited under Decreto 1074 de 2015 pay the reduced fee: $970,000 for the first class online, compared with $1,347,500 for the standard fee.
  • 25% reduction for CIGEPI or CATI guidance. If, before filing the application, you receive specialized guidance from the SIC’s Technological Information Center (CIGEPI) or from a Technology and Innovation Support Center (CATI), and you submit the certificate, a 25% reduction on the fee applies. The application must be filed within the two months following the issuance of the certificate.

The 25% reduction for CIGEPI or CATI guidance applies to all fees, including the accredited MSME fee.

Professional fees: what they depend on

The fees of the industrial property agent or attorney vary depending on the complexity of the case: the number of classes, the need for a prior trademark clearance search, and any response to oppositions or observations from the SIC. There is no single fee. A well-prepared application reduces the risk of denial and of later correction costs.

Other costs across the trademark’s life cycle

  • Opposition. If a third party opposes your application, filing or responding to an opposition has its own fee.
  • Renewal. The registration lasts 10 years. Renewing it has a fee of $734,000 per class online (Resolución 6167 of 2026). If the renewal is filed within the grace period, a surcharge applies.

How long it takes and what steps it involves

The procedure includes the trademark clearance search (recommended), the filing of the application, the publication in the Industrial Property Gazette, the opposition period, and the registrability examination. The total time depends on whether oppositions or requirements come up. It takes 8 to 12 months if no contingency arises. Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to register your trademark in Colombia?

The SIC's official fee to register a trademark in one class online is $1,347,500 in 2026, or $970,000 for accredited MSMEs, under Resolución 6167 of January 30, 2026. On top of that amount come the professional fees of the agent or attorney.

What do you need to register a trademark?

You need to define the trademark and the Nice Classification classes it covers, run a trademark clearance search, file the application with the SIC along with proof of payment of the fee, and handle the publication and the opposition period.

How much does it cost to create my trademark?

Creating the trademark, meaning the name and the design, is different from registering it. Registration with the SIC starts from the official fee; the cost of the design depends on the provider you hire.

How much does an attorney charge to register a trademark?

Fees vary depending on the complexity of the case, the number of classes, and whether oppositions or observations are filed. There is no single fee. SPI Américas quotes each case according to its scope.

Does registering my company with the Chamber of Commerce protect my trademark?

No. Registration with the Chamber of Commerce formalizes the company, but the exclusive right over the trademark is granted only by registration with the SIC. They are different procedures, before different entities, and with different costs.
